FAQ - Answers

Q1. Do I need a doctor's referral for physiotherapy treatment?
A1. No you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a private physiotherapist. However if you are claiming through private health insurance they may require a referral by a medical practitioner to authorise payment of treatment charges.

Q2. Can I claim the costs back through my insurance?
A2. Many insurance policies differ from one to the other. It is best to contact them and make sure they will reimburse you prior to commencing treatment

Q3. Can Physiotherapists manipulate my spine?
A3. Yes, at DMC physiotherapy your therapist has appropriate post graduate training to manipulate your spine.

Q4. How soon will I be seen?
A4. For patients in acute pain we can offer same-day “emergency” appointments. Please phone for availability. In normal circumstances you will be seen within 24 or 48 hours.

Q5. Will I be charged if I miss my appointment?
A5. At DMC Physio we send out email reminders 48 hours prior to appointments. 24 hours notice is required to change or cancel an appointment. This gives us the opportunity to give your appointment to another patient. Failure to give 24 hours notice or to not show up at your allotted time will result in you being charged the full fee. (However, if your appointment is taken by someone else, you will not be charged) Your insurance company will usually not cover the cost of non attendance.

Q6. How long does a treatment session last?
A6. Initial appointments are usually 45 minutes with subsequent appointments 30 minutes.

Q7. How many treatments will I need?
A7. Following your initial assessment, your Physiotherapist will discuss the appropriate treatment plan with you. This will include advice regarding the approximate number of treatments you may need.

Q8. What should I bring with me?
A8. You may be asked to undress to your underwear to assess the area of your body to be treated. Please bring shorts and a vest top if you would feel more comfortable. We will ensure your privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
If you are attending for a sports related problem it may be beneficial to bring your current trainers.
If you have X-rays, Scans or any other relevant medical information please bring them along as this will help with your assessment.

Q9. Will you talk to my doctor?
A9. Only if you say we can. It is however very important to communicate what is going on with either your GP or consultant. We will usually write to them at the end of a treatment episode to let them know what we have done.

Q10. What happens at an appointment?
A10. The first session is a third asking questions a third having look at the problem and a third doing some treatment. At subsequent sessions it’s mainly taken up with treatment. Some treatment sessions may involve a lot of talking. The more you understand your problem the better you can manage it.
